VOC-free

The abbreviation VOC refers to volatile organic compounds. The VOC group of substances includes, for example, hydrocarbons, alcohols and organic acids. VOCs are practically always present in indoor air. As a rule, the concentrations of individual VOCs in indoor spaces are relatively low and there is then no need to worry about adverse health effects. The individual VOCs can have very different effects on human health. These range from odor nuisance and irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes to acute effects and long-term effects. Some of these substances can cause cancer, damage genetic material or impair reproduction.

Possible sources of indoor VOCs include the storage of building products or interior furnishings, such as flooring, wall and ceiling materials, paints, coatings, adhesives and furniture. The volatile organic compounds enter indoor air from surfaces when solvents evaporate and liquid or paste products dry. But they can also escape into the air from solid products, such as plastics or other materials. To avoid VOCs indoors, low-emission products should be used.

With ipox epoxy hardeners (ipox EH), the properties of epoxy resin systems can be individually determined - fast or slow, hard or impact resistant, low viscosity or high viscosity, hydrophilic or hydrophobic, low VOC or VOC-free. ipox offers a broad product portfolio of VOC-free hardeners to keep emissions as low as possible.

We will be happy to provide you with further information and advice on how to avoid VOCs.

Reducing emissions from VOCs is an important goal for all chemical applications. ipox provides a variety of selected raw materials for formulating VOC-free epoxy technologies.

The combination of an epoxy resin with an aminic hardener is well known in the industry for the unique properties that such systems offer. Surface coatings exhibit high mechanical strengths, are scratch resistant, UV resistant, adhere very well to metal. Reactive diluents are very often added to self-leveling floor coatings to lower the viscosity of the epoxy and ensure good workability. In combination with reactive diluted epoxy, modified amines are used for curing, depending on the desired application properties, workability and surface quality.

The amine-based hardeners used here, often contain a high proportion of benzyl alcohol, which is needed to achieve a low viscosity for the entire system. However, this contributes to increased emissions of volatile organic compounds. To overcome this disadvantage, ipox has developed new VOC-free hardeners. These VOC-free hardeners do not contain benzyl alcohol or other solvents.
